Computer Music – April 2020

If you are anything like me, making ‘a track in an hour’ might seem like either the stuff of nightmares –the kind of thing where you simply assemble loops, press ‘export’ and you’re done – or the stuff of the impossible. Probably the latter in my case; I’ve never been close to making a track in an hour. Indeed that ‘album’* I’ve been working on for the last eight years… Well, let’s not go there.
But I can see the value in the exercise, as these are ridiculously busy times we all live in, which is why I’ve asked our experts to come up with this month’s cover feature: not one but six tracks, each done in less than 60 minutes, and all using the Plugin Suite and a select bunch of samples. And going through the results has been nothing short of astonishing. Not only do you get an insight into how other producers make music (hint: far quicker than me) but also an insight into genres you might never consider dabbling in (new country anyone?) So while you and I might agree that music making should be a thorough, thoughtful, meditative and mindful process, without a clock in sight, you will be amazed at what you can learn with such constraints, and, indeed, how much you can get done within them. So inspiring has the whole exercise been that next month I’m going to ‘make a magazine in an hour’. So, er, look out for that one…
